“I think that people are often turned off by the idea of climate change and their role in it because they think it's so big. So something we try to reiterate is that there are small changes you can make. And while they may be small, they are easy, and we can all do them together.”

ThE Rising Project

PROGRAMMING DIRECTOR

Climate change can feel overwhelming—like a never-ending crisis with no clear starting point. But at The Rising Project, we believe the conversation (and the solutions) don’t have to be daunting.

Rising is a student-run climate creative studio at the University of Oregon that merges science and communication to make sustainability more approachable, engaging, and even fun. Our team brings together students from across campus to collaborate on fresh, creative ways to spark action and make sustainability something people want to engage with.

Since joining Rising in 2022 and working my way up to Programming Director, I’ve learned how to keep an audience not just informed, but excited about climate communication. I lead two weekly meetings, help manage partnerships across campus, write a little bit, and help coordinate interactive events—like our annual Rising Games on Earth Day. Picture this: students racing through a bounce house obstacle course, trying to beat the time it takes for a forest fire to spread. Or decorating plant pots, upcycling clothes, and learning proper ways to recycle by playing a basketball-inspired game. It’s playful, unexpected, and gets over 500 students engaged in real conversations about climate action.

At Rising, we know that no action is too small when it comes to making a difference. We work to change the narrative—because sustainability shouldn’t feel like a burden. It should feel like an opportunity.
